How many holiday gifts have you received that were meaningful to you? How many have you given?
It may not be in good taste to tell other people what you want…but if you know they’ll be giving you a gift, doesn’t it make sense to tell what would be appreciated? Rather than getting something you’ll never use, it might make sense to drop a few hints to your closest friends and relatives. And if you really don’t want anything, request a donation to your favorite charity. What could be more meaningful than that?
Then look at it the other way. Do YOU know what your friends and family want? Maybe your niece and her fiancé are saving for a home, and a little extra cash would be nicer than the iPod you were considering. Maybe your uncle would prefer a charitable donation…or something else you might not have considered. Bring it up in a casual way and see where it takes you!
